Months: the age unit for the in-between
Years are too coarse for babies and toddlers, and days are too fine for everyone else. Months sit in between, which is why parents say their child is “eighteen months” rather than “one and a half”. As adults we drop months almost completely, yet the number is still there, ticking up on the same date every month. For most adults it is a three-digit number, and round figures like 400 or 500 months make quietly satisfying milestones that hardly anyone celebrates.
The ring above shows the current year of your life as twelve segments. Each filled segment is a month you have completed since your last birthday, and the partly filled one is the month you are in now. When the ring closes, you have a birthday.
How we calculate it
We count whole calendar months, not 30-day blocks. Your months completed are your age in whole years multiplied by 12, plus the whole months since your last birthday. A month is completed when the calendar reaches the same day-of-month as your birth date. If that day does not exist in a shorter month, such as the 31st in April, we use the last day of that month instead.
The strip of dates shows your next six “month birthdays”, so you can see where the short months pull your date earlier.
| Months old | Exact age | Often used for |
|---|---|---|
| 18 | 1 year 6 months | Toddler check-ups |
| 100 | 8 years 4 months | A first round number |
| 300 | 25 years | A quarter-century |
| 500 | 41 years 8 months | The half-thousand |
| 1,000 | 83 years 4 months | A four-digit month count |
Worked example. Someone born on 12 April 1990 was 36 on 30 October 2026. Since their birthday on 12 April 2026 they had completed six more months (to 12 October), so their age was 36 × 12 + 6 = 438 months and 18 days. Their 450-month mark falls on 12 October 2027.
Why months make good milestones
A month birthday comes round twelve times a year, so it is a handy check-in point for habits and goals. Round numbers like 400 and 500 months are also rare enough to feel special. You might reach 500 months at 41 years and eight months, a date nobody else will have on their calendar, which is exactly what makes it fun to mark.
Questions people ask
What if I was born on the 31st?
In months with fewer days, your “month birthday” moves to the last day of that month. Someone born on 31 January turns one month old on 28 February, or 29 February in a leap year.
Why not just multiply my age by 12?
That only works on your birthday. Between birthdays you have also completed some extra months, so we add the whole months since your last birthday.
Until what age do people count in months?
Parents usually switch from months to years around the second birthday. Doctors often keep using months up to 24 or even 36 months, because development changes so quickly.
How many months old is a 40-year-old?
Exactly 480 months on their 40th birthday, and up to 491 months the day before they turn 41.
