Why count your age in weeks?
Weeks are the rhythm most of us actually live by. Work, school, bin day and the weekend all repeat on a seven-day loop, so a number of weeks is easier to picture than a number of days and more precise than a number of months. That is why pregnancy and the first months of a baby’s life are tracked in weeks, and why people who like to keep score of their lives often switch to weeks as adults too. A typical adult is somewhere between one and four thousand weeks old, which feels like a surprisingly small, countable number.
Your weeks also have their own private calendar. Each one starts on the weekday you were born, so if you arrived on a Thursday, your 1,000th week began on a Thursday and so will your 3,000th. The dial above shows the seven days of the week you are in right now, with today highlighted.
How we calculate it
We count the calendar days from your birth to today, then divide by seven. The whole number is the weeks you have completed, and the remainder tells you which day of the current week you are on. Day one of every week is your birth weekday. Because this is based on days rather than years, leap days are included automatically.
The ruler marks every 1,000 weeks, which is about 19 years and two months. Most people pass the first mark in their late teens, the second around 38, the third around 57 and the fourth around 77.
| Weeks old | Roughly your age | What it lines up with |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 19 years 2 months | Leaving school, first year of work or study |
| 2,000 | 38 years 4 months | Halfway to 4,000 |
| 2,600 | 49 years 10 months | The run-up to 50 |
| 3,000 | 57 years 6 months | Three thousand Mondays, give or take |
| 4,000 | 76 years 8 months | The “four thousand weeks” of the famous book |
Worked example. Someone born on Thursday 12 April 1990 had lived 13,350 days by 30 October 2026. Dividing by seven gives 1,907 full weeks with one day left over, so they were in week 1,908 of their life, on its second day. Their 2,000-week mark arrives on 10 August 2028, a Thursday.
A useful way to see time
Counting in weeks makes plans feel real. A project that takes “a year” is really 52 of these loops, and a habit you keep once a week will happen about 520 times in a decade. If you find that motivating, the life-in-weeks grid lets you see every week of a chosen lifespan at once.
Questions people ask
When does a new week of my life start?
On the same weekday you were born. If you arrived on a Thursday, every one of your life’s weeks runs Thursday to Wednesday, whatever the calendar on your wall says.
How many weeks old is a one-year-old?
Exactly 52 weeks and one day, or 52 weeks and two days if the year included a 29 February.
Why do baby apps count in weeks?
Because babies change so quickly that months are too coarse. Paediatric growth charts and development guides are usually given week by week for the first few months.
How many weeks is 4,000 weeks?
About 76.7 years. The figure became well known from Oliver Burkeman’s book Four Thousand Weeks, which uses it as a rough picture of an average human lifespan.
