Counting down, properly

A birthday countdown is one of the oldest bits of fun with a calendar. Children cross off the sleeps, adults quietly check how many weekends are left to plan something, and everyone wants to know which day of the week it will land on. This page gives you all of those versions at once, plus a live clock down to the second and a small Sun that travels round your year from one birthday to the next.

The ring is your own personal year. It starts at the top on your last birthday and goes round clockwise, so the Sun’s position shows how far through your current age you are. When it gets back to the top, the counter resets and a new year begins.

How we calculate it

We find your next birthday by taking this year’s date for your birthday and moving to next year if it has already passed. The live clock counts down to midnight at the start of that day in your own time zone. The other units are counted from the calendar between now and then: sleeps are the nights in between, weekends are the Saturdays you will pass, Mondays are the Mondays, and months are whole calendar months. Your half birthday is six calendar months after your birthday.

Worked example. On 30 October 2026, someone born on 12 April has their next birthday on Monday 12 April 2027. That is 164 days away, with 24 Saturdays and 23 Mondays in between, not counting the birthday itself. Their half birthday, 12 October, has just passed.

Why a countdown helps

Seeing the wait in weekends rather than days is surprisingly useful. Most plans for a birthday, whether a trip, a dinner or a party, have to fit around weekends, so knowing there are only six left changes how soon you need to book. And for younger children, “sleeps” is simply the unit that makes sense.

Questions people ask

Does the countdown include today?

The days figure counts the full days left before your birthday begins at midnight. “Sleeps” counts the nights in between, which is one fewer on the evening before, and is the version children usually prefer.

When is my half birthday?

Six calendar months after your birthday. If that day does not exist, such as 31 August plus six months, we use the last day of the month (28 or 29 February).

I was born on 29 February. When is my countdown to?

In leap years it counts to 29 February. In other years it counts to 1 March, the date most countries use for legal purposes, and the page tells you which one it is using.

Can I count down to someone else’s birthday?

Yes. Just enter their birthday instead. The page remembers the last birthday you typed on this device, so change it back afterwards if you want your own figures on other pages.
