When your age and your date line up
A golden birthday happens once in a lifetime: the year your new age is the same number as the day you were born. Born on the 7th, you turn golden at 7; born on the 25th, you turn golden at 25. It has become a popular excuse for an extra-special party, often with gold decorations, and because it depends only on your birth date it is easy to plan years ahead.
The month grid above shows the idea at a glance. Every day from the 1st to the 31st has its own golden age, and yours is picked out in gold. Add a child’s or friend’s birthday in the second box and theirs appears in teal, which is handy for planning a surprise.
How we calculate it
We take the day of the month from your birth date and add that many years to your birth date. So 12 April 1990 plus 12 years gives 12 April 2002. Your double golden birthday adds twice the day: 24 years, giving 12 April 2014. If you were born on 29 February, your golden birthday is at 29, and we show the nearest date if that year is not a leap year.
| Born on the | Golden at | Double golden at |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | 1 | 2 |
| 9th | 9 | 18 |
| 16th | 16 | 32 |
| 23rd | 23 | 46 |
| 31st | 31 | 62 |
Worked example. Someone born on 12 April 1990 had their golden birthday on 12 April 2002, their 12th, a Friday. Their double golden birthday fell on 12 April 2014, a Saturday, when they turned 24.
Making it special
Golden birthday parties often lean into the number: 12 friends for a 12th, 25 candles, or a gift tied to the age. If yours has already passed, the double golden birthday is a good second chance, and for children it is fun to mark the date on the calendar years in advance so they can look forward to it.
Questions people ask
What is a golden birthday?
The birthday when you turn the same age as the day of the month you were born. Someone born on 12 April has their golden birthday when they turn 12, on 12 April. It is also called a champagne, star or lucky birthday.
Does everyone get one?
Yes, everyone born on the 1st to the 31st has one, at ages 1 to 31. People born early in the month have it before they can remember, which is why some families celebrate a “golden half birthday” or a double golden birthday instead.
What is a double golden birthday?
A playful extension: turning twice your birth day. Born on the 12th, your double golden birthday is your 24th. It gives people born on early dates a golden birthday they can actually enjoy.
Where did the idea come from?
The term is usually traced to Joan Bramsch, who promoted it in the 1950s, and it has since become a popular theme for birthday parties, especially in North America.
