Life in chapters of nineteen years
A thousand weeks sounds like a lot, but it is only about nineteen years. That makes it a neat way to divide a life into a few big chapters. Most people reach the first step around the end of school, the second in their late thirties, the third in their late fifties and the fourth in their late seventies. The staircase above shows each step with its date and the age you will be, and the small figure stands on the step you are on right now.
Every thousand-week mark falls on the weekday you were born, because 7,000 days is an exact number of weeks. If you arrived on a Thursday, all of your thousand-week birthdays are Thursdays too.
How we calculate it
We multiply each step by seven to get days, then add those days to your birth date on the real calendar. That gives exact dates for 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000 and 5,000 weeks, plus the half-steps if you switch them on. Your current position is the number of whole weeks you have lived, shown against the staircase so you can see how far up the current step you are.
| Weeks | Days | Age |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 7,000 | 19 years 2 months |
| 2,000 | 14,000 | 38 years 4 months |
| 3,000 | 21,000 | 57 years 6 months |
| 4,000 | 28,000 | 76 years 8 months |
| 5,000 | 35,000 | 95 years 10 months |
Worked example. Someone born on Thursday 12 April 1990 reached 1,000 weeks 7,000 days later, on Thursday 11 June 2009. Their 2,000-week step is Thursday 10 August 2028, when they will be 38.
A useful way to plan
Because each step is a long stretch, it is a good scale for big plans: what you want the next nineteen years to hold, rather than the next few months. Some people use their thousand-week birthdays as check-in days, writing a short note to their future self to open at the next step.
Questions people ask
How long is 1,000 weeks?
7,000 days, which is about 19 years, 2 months and 2 weeks. Every thousand-week mark falls on the same weekday you were born.
Why count in thousands of weeks?
They split a life into chapters of about 19 years: childhood and school, early adulthood, middle age, later life. Seeing them as steps can make long-term planning feel more concrete.
What happens at 4,000 weeks?
You are about 76 years and 8 months old. The number became well known through Oliver Burkeman’s book Four Thousand Weeks, as a rough picture of an average human life.
Can I mark half-thousands too?
Yes. Tick the half-steps option and the staircase adds 500, 1,500, 2,500 and so on, roughly every nine and a half years.
