A countable number
Weekends are where much of life happens: time with friends and family, trips, hobbies, rest. Because they come round every seven days, they feel endless. Counted up, they are not. Someone in their mid thirties has roughly 2,300 weekends before 80, which is plenty, but a number small enough to make you think about how to use them. The chart above draws every one as a dot, a row for each year, so you can see the whole stretch at once.
The colours show the seasons. Summer weekends are the most precious for many people, and there are only about 13 a year. Switch to the southern hemisphere if your summer falls in December to February.
How we calculate it
We find the date you reach the age you choose and count every Saturday from tomorrow up to that date. Seasons follow the usual meteorological definition: summer is June to August in the northern hemisphere and December to February in the southern. Three-day weekends count the five US federal holidays fixed to a Monday each year: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day.
| Years ahead | Weekends | Summer weekends | Three-day weekends (US) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 522 | about 130 | 50 |
| 20 | 1,044 | about 260 | 100 |
| 30 | 1,565 | about 390 | 150 |
| 45 | 2,348 | about 590 | 225 |
Worked example. Someone born on 12 April 1990 who counts to age 80 has 2,268 weekends from 30 October 2026 until 12 April 2070. About 565 of them fall in summer, and 9 are left in 2026.
Using them well
Some people find it helps to plan weekends a season at a time: one for a trip, one for friends, one deliberately empty. Others protect a weekend each month for something they keep putting off. Either way, seeing the number makes each one feel less like a default and more like a choice.
Questions people ask
What does the age I choose mean?
It is the age you want to count up to, so you can see how many weekends fit before then. It is your choice, not a prediction of anything.
How are weekends counted?
Each Saturday from tomorrow until your chosen birthday counts as one weekend. If your chosen birthday falls on a Sunday, that last weekend still counts.
Why are the dots different colours?
They show the season each weekend falls in, so you can see your summers and winters ahead. Switch the hemisphere if you live south of the equator.
How many long weekends are there?
In the United States, five federal holidays always fall on a Monday, giving at least five three-day weekends a year. In England and Wales, six of the eight bank holidays are usually Mondays.
