How much time does a daily habit add up to?

A jar that fills with one marble for every full day a habit takes. Pick a habit, set the minutes, and see what it adds up to by any age you choose.

The age is your choice, a point to add up to, not a prediction.

Small minutes, big totals

Habits are easy to underestimate because each day’s share feels tiny. Twenty minutes of reading, a half-hour walk or ten minutes of meditation barely registers on a busy day. Repeated across years, those minutes become some of the largest blocks of time in a life. The jar above makes that visible: every marble is one full 24-hour day spent on the habit, counted from today up to the age you choose.

It works in both directions. A good habit of 20 minutes a day adds up to months of reading or practice; a habit you would like to cut back on, such as scrolling, can add up to years. Use the presets to try a few, then set your own minutes and days.

How we calculate it

We multiply the minutes per day by the number of days a week you do it, then by 52.18, the average number of weeks in a year, to get a yearly total. We multiply that by the years between today and the age you choose. Full days are the total hours divided by 24; waking days divide by 16. Comparisons use an average reading speed of 250 words a minute and a typical book length of 90,000 words.

30 minutes183 hours1,826 hours7,305 hours

Worked example. Someone born on 12 April 1990 who reads for 20 minutes every day, adding it up from 30 October 2026 to age 80, gets about 5,290 hours, which is 220 full days in the jar. At 250 words a minute that is roughly 880 books of average length.

Making a habit stick

Research on habit formation suggests it takes anywhere from a few weeks to several months for a new behaviour to feel automatic, and that tying it to an existing routine helps. Starting small matters more than starting big: five minutes you actually do beats an hour you skip.

Questions people ask

Why does a few minutes a day add up so much?

Because it repeats. Ten minutes a day is about 61 hours a year, which is more than a full working week and a half. Over 30 years that becomes more than 1,800 hours, the same as almost a year of full-time work.

What does the age I choose mean?

It is simply the point up to which you want to add things up, so you can see a habit’s total over any stretch of life. It is your choice, not an estimate of anything.

How are “days” counted?

A day in the jar is a full 24 hours of the habit. We also show waking days of 16 hours, which feel closer to how we experience time.

How many hours does it take to learn a language?

The US Foreign Service Institute estimates that English speakers need about 600 to 750 hours of study to reach professional working ability in languages close to English, such as Spanish, French or Italian, and around 2,200 hours for languages such as Japanese, Korean or Arabic.
