Your age on a particular day

Forms, visas, school entry rules and insurance quotes often ask how old you were, or will be, on a specific date rather than today. It sounds simple, but it trips people up near birthdays and across leap years. This calculator gives the exact answer in years, months and days for any date you choose, and the timeline lets you drag through your whole life to see how your age lines up with real calendar years.

The quick buttons cover dates people often ask about, such as the start of the next decade or the turn of 2050. Your age on those days is something you can plan around, whether that is a big trip, a reunion or simply a date to look forward to.

How we calculate it

We start from your birthday and step forward whole years until the next one would pass the chosen date. That gives your age in years. Then we step forward whole months in the same way, and whatever is left over is days. Months are calendar months, so the count follows the real calendar rather than assuming 30-day months, and the leftover days are counted from the most recent month mark.

BornDateExact age
12 April 199011 April 203039 years, 11 months, 30 days
12 April 199012 April 203040 years exactly
31 January 200029 February 202828 years, 0 months, 29 days
29 February 20001 March 202727 years exactly

Worked example. Someone born on 12 April 1990 wants to know their age on 1 January 2050. From 12 April 1990 to 12 April 2049 is 59 whole years. From 12 April 2049 to 12 December 2049 adds eight whole months, and 12 December to 1 January is 20 more days. So they will be 59 years, 8 months and 20 days old as 2050 begins.

Past dates are just as useful

The same calculation works backwards. Choose the date of a wedding, a move or a first job and you get your exact age at that moment, which is often more meaningful than the year alone. It is also an easy way to settle family debates about who was how old when something happened.

Questions people ask

Can I use a date in the past?

Yes. Pick any date after your birth and the calculator shows how old you were then, which is handy for forms that ask your age at a past event.

How do you count age on the day before a birthday?

You are still the younger age until the birthday itself begins. On the day before you turn 40, you are 39 years, 11 months and some days old.

What about people born on 29 February?

In common years we treat 1 March as the birthday for counting purposes, which is how age is reckoned in many countries, including the UK. Some places use 28 February instead.

Is “age next birthday” the same thing?

No. Some insurers and older forms ask for the age you will be at your next birthday, which is one more than your current age. This page shows your exact age on the date you pick.
