What time is it on my life clock?

Squeeze a life into a single day, from midnight at birth to midnight at an age you choose. See what time it is on your clock now, when your milestones fall, and how long one real day lasts.

The age is a scenario you choose to set midnight, not a prediction.

A lifetime on a clock face

Years are hard to feel, but everyone knows the shape of a day: the dark early hours, the bright middle, the long evening. Map a life onto a single day and it suddenly becomes intuitive. With a day that ends at 80, a twenty-year-old is just past six in the morning, someone at 40 has reached noon, and retirement at 65 arrives around half past seven in the evening. The dial above shows where you are, with the sky shading from night to day and back.

The comparison is not meant to alarm. It mostly shows how much of the day is still to come for younger people, and how full an afternoon can be for everyone else.

How we calculate it

We divide your exact age by the age you choose and multiply by 24 hours. Each year is then 24 hours divided by that age, and each real day of life is that figure divided by 365.2425. The clock keeps moving while you watch.

AgeClock time (day ends at 80)Clock time (day ends at 90)
1805:2404:48
3009:0008:00
4012:0010:40
5015:0013:20
6519:3017:20

Worked example. Someone born on 12 April 1990 is about 36.55 years old on 30 October 2026. With a day that ends at 80, their life clock reads 10:57 in the morning. Each year moves the clock 18 minutes, and each real day just under 3 seconds.

Making use of the hours

One way to read the clock is as a planner: what you would do with the next hour on it, which is about three years of real life at the usual setting. That is long enough to learn a language, train for a marathon or change direction entirely.

Questions people ask

What does the age I choose do?

It sets when the clock reaches midnight. With 80, the day runs from birth at midnight to your 80th birthday at the next midnight. It is a scenario you pick to make the picture work, not a prediction.

How fast does the clock move?

With a day that ends at 80, each year of life is 18 minutes on the clock and each real day is about 3 seconds. Choose a different age and the speed changes.

Why does the sky change colour?

The dial shades from night through dawn, day and dusk, so you can see whether your life clock reads early morning, midday or evening.

Is anything saved?
